The Battle of Stalingrad
The Battle of Stalingrad occurred from July 17, 1942 to January 31, 1943. This battle was fought between the German and Soviet armies in a Russian city called Stalingrad. The German people almost won the battle, but when the Russian winter came, the Soviet army was able to win the battle and end the German offensive in Eastern Europe.
The Location of the Battle
Today, the city of Stalingrad is known as Volgograd. Russia changed the name of the city from Stalingrad to Volgograd in 1961. This was not the first time that the city's name was changed. In 1925, the name of the city was changed from Tsaritsyn to Stalingrad.
